Welcome Remarks from the Director

Sr. Jane Soita

Welcome to the Starehe Girls’ Centre’s website. The Centre was established as a charitable national girls high school for bright but financially and socially disadvantaged students. The Centre was established via the collective efforts of individuals who envisioned an institution with a holistic educational approach.

Starehe Girls Centre is located off Kiambu Road at Bustani Estate, Njathaini, a tranquil setting about 18 kilometers north of Nairobi. The Centre is administratively located in Nairobi County, Kasarani sub-county, Kasarani Division, Roysambu Zone, and Marurui Location. The Starehe Girls community currently consists of a Director, Deputy Director, Principal, and a staff of 48 teachers and 46 non-teaching and support personnel.

The Centre’s consistent development is attributed to the tireless efforts of the Boards of Trustees and Management, funders, sponsors, partners, staff, and students. When Starehe Girls Centre received seventy-two (72) girls from every county in Kenya, it had three little old dorms. Each of these dormitories held 24 girls. There were two classes, each of which could accommodate 36 females. Two more classrooms, which lacked equipment and amenities, were converted into laboratories to teach Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Agriculture. These structures were inherited from the Limuru Girls Centre.

Currently, there are 600 students. 70% are sponsored students, while 30% are self-supported. The school motto “Elimu Yetu, Nguvu Yetu” (Our Education, Our Strength) reflects the Centre’s dedication to academic achievement. Over the last seventeen years of KCSE examination, an average of 95 percent of graduates have been admitted to various state institutions, a few to overseas universities, and a few more to diploma programs.

The Centre continues to play a significant part in each student’s physical, intellectual, spiritual, and social development. We take pride in raising well-rounded students capable of dealing with today’s complex situations. Sports, music, movement, and clubs are among the Centre’s most popular extracurricular activities.

I need to look on our twenty-year history and future as a management best practice. All successful organizations reflect and plan, so while the Centre continues to make considerable progress in student numbers, academic accomplishment, and infrastructure, we must acknowledge and plan for the future. The progress made is astounding. It continues to advocate for unity of purpose, partner collaboration, and the Centre’s vision, mission, and guiding principles.

The Trustees continue to organize fundraising initiatives. Each year, the Centre holds a golf charity in the first term, an annual walk in the second term, and an annual dinner in the third term as a tradition. We respectfully and sincerely request that everyone with good will to collaborate with the Starehe Girls Centre community to support girls’ education.

We are extremely grateful to all of our stakeholders, sponsors, funders, and supporters. I sincerely hope that we will continue to work together on this important project. Many thanks for the outstanding work you have done and continue to do. We cannot thank you enough.

Finally, I’d like to welcome you to visit our Centre, learn more and Support us. Best wishes and God’s blessings to all.
